This competency-based course provides instruction in basic reading for three grade levels – Levels 4, 5 and 6. Emphasis is placed on
- listening and oral skills, vocabulary development, comprehension;
- reading in the content areas;
- integrating reading and writing;
- reference and study skills;
- independent living/workplace preparation: and
- developing a general interest in reading.
Adults are provided with the basic reading skills that integrate SCANS competencies, English-Language Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools, Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) competencies, and the Model Program Standards for Adult Basic Education. The ultimate goal is to help adult students acquire the competencies needed to fulfill their roles as family members, workers and community members.
The 450 hours indicated for the completion of this course are based on a student entering at Level 4.0 and advancing to level 6.9. However, most students enter the reading program at various abilities and skill levels and may not need 450 hours to complete this course outline. The completion time will differ for each student. This course outline also includes applications and mechanisms for ongoing evaluation of the students so that promotion and advancement occur on a regular basis, and the students do not remain in the program for more than needed.PREREQUISITES:
Ability to read at minimum of 4.0 grade level.
After a student has completed this course, he may not be allowed to re-enroll in the course.
