This competency-based course provides instruction in basic reading for four grade levels – Levels 0 (readiness), 1,2 and 3. Emphasis is placed on
- readiness skills, oral and listening skills, word attack skills vocabulary development, comprehension;
- reading applications integrated with life skills;
- integrating reading and writing;
- reference, location and study skills; and
- developing a general interest in reading.
Adults are provided with the basic reading skills that integrate SCANS competencies, English-Language Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools, Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) competencies, and the Model Program Standards for Adult Basic Education. The ultimate goal is to help adult students acquire the competencies needed to fulfill their roles as family members, workers and community members.
The 1200 hours indicated for the completion of this course are based on a student entering as a nonreader and advancing to grade level 3.9. However, most students enter the reading program at various abilities and skill levels and may not need 1200 hours to complete this course outline. The completion time will differ for each student. This course outline also includes applications and mechanisms for ongoing evaluation of the students so that promotion and advancement occur on a regular basis, and the students do not remain in the program for more than needed.PREREQUISITES:

After a student has completed this course, he may not be allowed to re-enroll in the course.
