COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This competency-based course provides instruction in basic math for Level 7. Emphasis is placed on

 computing with and applying rational numbers,
 using measurement and geometry to solve problems,
 using algebraic tools (graphs, equations) to solve problems, and
 using data and probability to solve problems.

Adults are provided with the basic math skills that integrate SCANS competencies, Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools, Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) competencies, and the Model Program Standards for Adult Basic Education. The ultimate goal is to help adult students acquire the competencies needed to fulfill their roles as family members, workers and community members.

The 250 hours indicated for the completion of this course are based on a student entering at Level 7 and advancing to level 7.9. However, most students enter the math program at various abilities and skill levels and may not need 250 hours to complete this course outline. The completion time will differ for each student. This course outline also includes applications and mechanisms for ongoing evaluation of the students so that promotion and advancement occur on a regular basis, and the students do not remain in the program for more than needed.

PREREQUISITES:

Completion of Basic Math – Beginning (53-03-72), a score of 80% or higher on the ABS Program Basic Math- Beginning posttest (Form A or B), or a math grade level of 7.0

After a student has completed this course, he may not be allowed to re-enroll in the course.
